About Jeff Mathison

Jeff Mathison • Fundamentally, I believe the job of the artist is to call attention to what the artist finds beautiful and true.•

If a viewer connects with one of my images, the Fine Art America site makes it easy to choose a print that will add beauty to their home or business, while helping to support me in my calling.

I've created two galleries at this site.

In Landscapes, I showcase my watercolors of this beautiful land, mostly Pennsylvania, but also including the Eastern Shore and the red rock of Moab UT. These may be painted "en plein air", meaning that I work outside, and try to capture the fleeting light of the moment. Or the watercolors may be created from photographs in my studio. The photo above shows me painting the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, Utah.

In The Free Spirit, I feature the Nude in Nature. I believe there is a part of the human spirit that blends with the spirit of the wilderness. The wild area may be the rhododendron shaded brooks of the Pennsylvania woodland, or the red rock of untrammeled canyons in Utah.

Whatever I may paint, I am always seeking to find the hidden beauty and meaning.

I graduated from Penn State in 1972 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Impressed by the central Pennsylvania combination of town and country, I located my studio in nearby Spring Mills. For twenty five years, I was the graphic artist for Archaeological and Historical Consultants, Inc. of Centre Hall. My projects there have included paintings of historical sites the way they would have looked 150 years ago, as well as paintings of present day sites the way they would look upon completion of a proposed project. I also illustrate on a freelance basis. National illustration clients include Harcourt Publishers, Watson-Guptill, and Harper Collins Publishers. Illustrated maps are a specialty of mine. Recently I created two illustrative maps for reissues of The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, and a map for Lavinia, by Ursula K. LeGuin. My fine art has been exhibited in many galleries and art festivals in the Mid-Atlantic region. My most recent award was a Juror’s Citation at the Cooperstown Art Association of New York, National Juried Art Show. The award winning work was The Life Cycle of the Common Baseball, an assemblage of found and crafted objects.

Over the years I have created artworks in many media. Please visit my website for a view of a wider range of my work.

Thank you for visiting my page. I truly appreciate all the viewers, and especially the comments I have received.
